In need of suggestions!!!!!

Since we are getting ready to finally build our home, I wanted any suggestions from you.

There are so many things to pick from and of course they all say their product is the best, but I want to know what really takes the cake! Like what kind of coutertops really are the easiest to keep up on. I don't want any thing I have to seal once a year. I love the look of grantie but holy crap, it can be expensive.

What kind of tiles are easy to clean and still look great after awhile for bathrooms?

I have heard people say when they built or bought, they wish they would have picked out something different.

What kind of cabinets hold up to children banging them?

I want all your suggestions or comments. I can't wait to see them.

There is also so many things that are overrated. I don't want to spend a ton of money on something if I can apply that money somewhere else.

So please give us any suggestions you have!!!!!

My first thought is don't do tile (especially pourous tile) on your bathroom countertops or around the top of your tub. It is such a pain to clean. That was my biggest pet peeve in my other house. And if you do granite on your counters in the kitchen do full granite not granite tile its just a pain if you roll out cookie dough and things. I will keep thinking but so far this is what i thought of!

I have never built a house but I have done some home improvements to my house and we tiled the kitchen floor with this really nice dark tile. But the tile is so smooth that when it gets wet its like a death trap. I just got new carpet that is dark and plush and wonderful things get lost in it and I never feel like i need to vacuum its like the carpet just sucks it up its awesome!! Hope this helps..

We have slate tile in our bathroom. It is GORGEOUS but the tough texture of the tile is extremely difficult to clean.

We are remodeling the house right now and the countertop guy said that a pattern is better b/c then you dont see swipe marks, etc. I also saw these cabinets that have a hole instead of hardware. It is pretty cool. Ill try to find a picture to explain.

K two more suggestions. I emailed you a picture of the can cupboard i have in my house now. I love it if you have room in your kitchen you should do it. Also you should put in a trash compactor. I literally take out the garbage once a week. Compared to twice a day without one. I love it!

We are planning on building as well and I love that you posted this so I can look at everybody's comments! I like travertine tile... seems to hold up the best, but I think I like hard wood floors for kids so that if they fall they won't craxk their hea open ya know... countertops I prefer granite but my mom got corrian and they didn't scratch and were easy to clean and are little less expensive! In our house I am going to have as little of carpet as possible b/c kids just ruin it! Not an expert but just a little advice! Oh and I was talking to a contractor and he said that whatever you are able to save on flooring, countertops, and everything else you should try and put into your cabinets... like the cool ones that don't slam shut... have you seen them? they are amazing... so I would like to spend the most on my cabinets so that they will hold up... but thats just me!
